Why a web tool can work without internet
A website is, at its core, a bundle of files: HTML, styles and JavaScript. When you open a page, your browser downloads that bundle and runs it. If the tool's logic is inside the bundle, as it is for a PDF merger, an image compressor, a JSON formatter or a unit converter, then once the download is complete the browser has everything it needs. Your files are read from your disk, processed by the code that is already loaded, and the result is saved back. No further network traffic is required.
The opposite design keeps the logic on a server. The page is just a front door that sends your input away and shows whatever comes back. Take away the connection and the door leads nowhere. This is also why the airplane-mode test is a useful way to find out where the work happens.
After the page has loaded, tools that run in your browser keep working because the code and your files are already on your device.
What keeps working with no connection
Once a Robince Studio tool page is open, the processing tools carry on without a network. Examples include merging, splitting, compressing, rotating and signing PDFs, compressing and resizing images, formatting and converting JSON, CSV and YAML, case conversion and text cleanup, unit and calculator tools, and generators such as password or QR code makers that compute their result locally. For PDF rendering, the PDF.js worker that draws pages is part of the site's own bundle, so previews and page thumbnails do not depend on a separate download.
In practice that means you can open the tool you need at the airport, board the plane, and finish the job at 35,000 feet.
What does need the network
Being honest about this matters, because a few things genuinely depend on the internet.
- Loading the page for the first time. The site has to arrive over the network once, so open the tools you need while you are still online.
- Fonts and icons. The page loads its typefaces and icon font from Google Fonts. Offline, text may appear in a default system font and some icons may show as plain words until the font is available. The tool still works.
- Advertising. Ads load from an ad network and simply do not appear offline. Your task is unaffected.
- Live data. The currency converter fetches reference exchange rates, so it needs a connection for fresh rates. It keeps the most recent rates it received in your browser's storage, which lets it show a recent set when you are offline, along with an indication of its age. Anything that relies on live data, such as exchange rates, will not update without a connection.
- Reloading. If you refresh or close and reopen the tab while offline, the browser may not be able to fetch the page again. We do not ship an installable offline app, so a cold start with no connection can fail unless your browser has cached the page.
How to prepare
- Open each tool you expect to need while you are online and wait until it finishes loading, including the page's interface.
- Keep those tabs open. Do not refresh them and do not close them. A tab that is already loaded is the most reliable offline tool.
- Run a quick test before you leave: switch on airplane mode and process a small file to confirm the tool completes.
- Have your source files stored on the device itself, not as links to cloud storage that need a connection to fetch. Files that live only in a cloud drive will not open offline.
- For currency work, open the converter once online so fresh rates are saved to your browser.
Tips for reliable offline work
- Download results immediately. Saved files go to your device's downloads folder, so you can attach them later when you reconnect.
- Mind your memory. Offline or not, large PDFs and images are processed in memory. Close unneeded tabs to give the active tool more room, especially on phones.
- Avoid private browsing for long sessions you cannot repeat. Some browsers limit stored data and may clear tabs more aggressively when memory is tight.
- Do not rely on background tabs on mobile. A phone may unload an inactive tab to save memory, which means the page has to be reloaded and needs a connection. Finish your tasks while the tab is in the foreground.
- Keep your battery in mind. Rendering PDF pages and compressing images uses real processor time.
Offline and privacy go together
There is a pleasant side effect: a tool that works offline is a tool that cannot be sending your file anywhere at that moment. That makes offline use a good habit for sensitive documents such as contracts, ID scans or statements. Load the page, disconnect, process the file, save the result, reconnect. For a full explanation of how to check this on any site, see our guide on checking whether a website uploads your files.
Limits worth remembering
We make no promise of a perfect offline experience. There is no installable offline app and no guarantee your browser will keep the page cached across restarts. Some tools depend on live data. Fonts and ads are fetched from the network and will be missing. And, as always with local processing, very large files are bounded by your device's memory. If your work demands guaranteed offline availability, a native desktop application installed on your machine is the more dependable option.
Frequently asked questions
Will the tools work if I lose internet in the middle of a task?
Yes for tools that run in the browser. The code and your file are already on your device, so processing can finish without a connection.
Why do icons or fonts look different offline?
Fonts and icons are loaded from the internet. Without a connection the browser falls back to default fonts, and some icons may show as words. The tools still function.
Does the currency converter work offline?
It needs a connection to get new exchange rates. It can show the most recent rates it saved in your browser, but they will not update until you reconnect.
Can I reopen a tool while offline?
Not reliably. The page must be loaded once while online. If you keep the tab open you can keep using it; a fresh visit with no connection may fail.
