History of Tajikistan
The lands of Tajikistan were part of ancient Bactria and Sogdia and later came under Persian, Greek and Arab rule. In the 9th and 10th centuries the Samanid dynasty promoted Persian-language culture from Central Asian cities. Mongol, Timurid and Uzbek khanate rule followed, and Russia expanded into the region in the 1860s and 1870s. The Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was created in 1929 after earlier Soviet administrative arrangements. Tajikistan declared independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved. A civil war lasted from 1992 to 1997, ending with a peace agreement.
