History of Taiwan

Austronesian-speaking Indigenous peoples lived on Taiwan for thousands of years before large-scale Han Chinese settlement. The Dutch and Spanish established outposts in the 1620s, and the Dutch were expelled in 1662 by Koxinga. The Qing dynasty took control in 1683 and ruled until ceding the island to Japan in 1895. After Japan's defeat in 1945, the Republic of China administered Taiwan, and its government relocated there in 1949 after the Chinese Civil War. Martial law ended in 1987, and democratic elections followed. Taiwan's political status is disputed, and it is governed separately from mainland China.
