History of Mongolia
The Mongolian plateau was home to nomadic peoples, among them the Xiongnu, who formed a powerful confederation around the 3rd century BC. In 1206 Genghis Khan united the Mongol tribes, and his successors built the Mongol Empire, which extended across much of Eurasia. Following the fall of the Yuan dynasty in 1368, Mongolia fragmented, and by the late 17th and 18th centuries it came under Qing rule. Mongolia declared independence in 1911, and a socialist revolution in 1921 led to the Mongolian People's Republic in 1924. A peaceful democratic revolution in 1990 led to a new constitution in 1992. Its capital is Ulan Bator.
