History of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The island of Saint Vincent was home to Carib (Kalinago) people, who resisted European settlement for generations, and became a refuge for Africans of mixed Carib descent known as the Garifuna. French settlers arrived in the early eighteenth century, and Britain took control by treaty in 1763. After conflicts in the 1770s and 1790s, many Garifuna were deported to Central America in 1797. Plantation agriculture followed until emancipation in the 1830s. The country became an associated state in 1969 and independent in 1979, comprising the main island and part of the Grenadines.
