History of Grenada

Grenada was inhabited by Arawak and later Carib peoples before European contact. Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1498, but lasting European settlement began with the French in 1650. Britain gained control under the Treaty of Paris in 1763, and sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans shaped the colonial economy. Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in the 1830s. Grenada became an associated state in 1967 and gained independence in 1974. A revolution in 1979 and a United States-led intervention in 1983 marked its later history. St. George's is the capital.
