History of Dominican Republic
The Taino people inhabited the eastern part of Hispaniola when Columbus arrived in 1492. Santo Domingo, founded in 1496, became the first permanent European settlement in the Americas and the base of Spanish colonial rule. In 1697 Spain ceded the western third of the island to France. After a period of Haitian rule beginning in 1822, the Dominican Republic declared independence on 27 February 1844. Spain briefly resumed control from 1861 to 1865, and the United States occupied the country from 1916 to 1924. It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
