How to Proofread and Rewrite Your Writing with AI

This guide is for anyone who writes essays, reports, posts or applications and wants a second pair of eyes. You will learn to ask an AI to correct mistakes and improve clarity, compare the new version with your original, and keep your own voice and meaning.

Step by step

  1. Finish your own draft first

Write the whole piece yourself, even if it is rough. The AI can only improve what you give it, and your ideas should come from you. Editing is much easier when a full draft exists.

  2. Decide what kind of help you need

Choose one job at a time: fix spelling and grammar only, make it clearer, make it shorter, or change the tone. Asking for everything at once usually changes more than you wanted.

  3. Tell the AI what not to change

State your limits clearly, such as keep my meaning, keep my facts, and keep my simple style. This reduces the chance of the AI adding new claims or making your writing sound like someone else.

  4. Ask for changes to be listed

Request the corrected text plus a short list of what was changed and why. Seeing reasons helps you learn from your mistakes and lets you reject any change you do not agree with.

  5. Compare the old and new versions

Put your original and the new text side by side, or use a text comparison tool. Check that every change is an improvement and that no meaning, fact or number has quietly shifted.

  6. Accept only what you agree with

Keep the edits that help and ignore the rest. Then read the final piece aloud once. If a sentence no longer sounds like you, change it back to your own wording.

Prompts you can copy

Replace the parts in [square brackets] with your own details. The more specific you are, the better the answer.

Fix mistakes only, nothing else
Proofread the text below. Fix spelling, grammar and punctuation only. Do not change my wording, my meaning or my facts. Return the corrected text, then list each change you made in a short bullet with the reason. If something is unclear, flag it instead of rewriting it. Text: [paste your text here]
Make my writing clearer
Rewrite the text below so it is clearer and easier to read for [your audience, e.g. a hiring manager]. Keep my meaning, facts and numbers exactly the same. Keep my voice [plain, formal or friendly]. Shorten long sentences, but do not add new claims. Then explain your three biggest changes. Text: [paste your text here]
Give feedback without rewriting
Read the text below and give me feedback instead of rewriting it. List up to [number, e.g. 5] things that are confusing, repetitive or weak, and quote the exact phrase for each. For each one, suggest how I could fix it myself. Text: [paste your text here]

A worked example

Sofia, a college student, wants her short application paragraph checked for grammar and clarity without changing what she says.

YouProofread the text below. Fix spelling, grammar and punctuation only. Do not change my meaning or facts. List each change with a reason. Text: I am very intrested in this course because I have always enjoyed solving problems and me and my friends often builds small apps together.
AI assistant (illustrative answer)Corrected: I am very interested in this course because I have always enjoyed solving problems, and my friends and I often build small apps together. Changes: 1) intrested became interested, a spelling fix. 2) A comma was added before and to separate two ideas. 3) me and my friends often builds became my friends and I often build, to fix subject and verb agreement.

Check before you use it

  • Compare the new text with your original and confirm no facts, numbers, names or meanings were changed without your approval.
  • Read every listed change and accept only those you understand and agree with, rather than copying the whole result.
  • Check that the result still sounds like you, and restore your own wording where the AI made it stiff or fancy.
  • Look for new claims or phrases the AI added that you cannot back up, and delete them.
  • Run a final spelling check yourself, and read the text aloud to catch anything the AI missed.

Common mistakes

  • Asking for a full rewrite when you only need proofreading. Ask for corrections only, or the AI may change your meaning.
  • Accepting every change blindly. Review each edit, because a smoother sentence can still be less accurate.
  • Submitting AI-written text as your own work. Check the rules for your school or job, and keep the ideas yours.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI proofread better than a spell checker?

It can catch more, such as awkward phrasing and wrong word choices, but it also makes mistakes and may change your meaning. Use it as a second opinion, and still read the final text carefully yourself.

How do I stop AI from changing my style?

Tell it clearly to fix only grammar and spelling, keep your wording, and flag unclear parts instead of rewriting them. Then compare the versions and restore any phrase that no longer sounds like you.

Is it okay to use AI to edit schoolwork?

Rules differ between schools and teachers. Some allow light editing, others do not. Check your own policy before you use it. Whatever you do, keep the ideas and the main writing your own, and be honest about help.
