XIRR Calculator
Paste or type dated cash flows to find the annualised return (XIRR) of investments made on different days. It works for SIPs, lump sums and partial withdrawals, entirely in your browser.

How to use XIRR Calculator
- Enter one cash flow per line: a date, then an amount. Use negative amounts for money you invested and positive amounts for money you received or the current value.
- Paste straight from a spreadsheet (tab separated) or use commas; choose the day/month order for dates like 31/03/2024.
- Make sure there is at least one negative and one positive amount.
- Read the XIRR, absolute gain, total invested and total received.
The XIRR formula
XIRR finds the rate r that solves: sum of Ai / (1 + r)^((di - d0) / 365) = 0, where Ai is the amount of cash flow i, di its date and d0 the earliest date. Because a closed form does not exist, the page starts Newton-Raphson from 10 per cent and, if it does not converge, scans a range of rates for a sign change and uses bisection, which always converges once a bracket is found.
Worked example: you invest 10,000 on 1 January 2023, another 10,000 on 1 July 2023 and your holding is worth 22,000 on 1 January 2024. The absolute gain is 22,000 - 20,000 = 2,000. Because half the money was invested for only six months, the annualised rate is higher than the simple 10 per cent: the XIRR is about 13.44 per cent. In a simple case, 10,000 on 1 January 2023 growing to 11,000 on 1 January 2024 gives exactly 10 per cent, which equals CAGR.
Entering data correctly
Treat every investment as negative and every redemption, dividend or the current portfolio value as positive. For a monthly SIP list each instalment as a negative line, then add one positive line for the value today dated today. Include fees or exit loads if you want a net figure. When pasting, keep the date first; a header line is ignored automatically.
Dates written year-first are unambiguous. For day-first versus month-first dates, use the selector so 04/05/2024 is read the way you intend.
- Use the real transaction dates, not month ends.
- Include every contribution, otherwise the rate is overstated.
- Date the current value on the day you checked it.
Limits and privacy
XIRR assumes each cash flow could be reinvested at the same rate, which is an assumption and not a promise. It ignores tax unless you include it in the flows, and a high XIRR over a short period does not predict the future. The result is an estimate, not financial advice. All parsing and calculation happen in your browser, and your pasted data is never uploaded or stored.
Why use this xirr calculator tool
- Paste from a spreadsheet. Accepts tab, comma or semicolon separated lines and dates such as 2024-03-31, 31/03/2024 and 31-Mar-2024.
- Reliable solver. Uses Newton-Raphson and automatically falls back to bisection when Newton does not settle.
- Clear validation. Tells you which line could not be read and when the cash flows cannot give a rate.
- Absolute gain too. Shows invested amount, received amount and the plain gain beside the annual rate.
Frequently asked questions
What is XIRR?
XIRR is the annual rate that makes the present value of all dated cash flows equal to zero, using actual days divided by 365. It is the same idea as the spreadsheet XIRR function and suits investments made on irregular dates.
How is XIRR different from CAGR?
CAGR needs one starting value, one ending value and a period. XIRR handles many deposits and withdrawals on different dates. With exactly one investment and one withdrawal the two give the same answer, and this page shows the CAGR in that case.
Why do I get an error or odd result?
You need at least one negative and one positive amount, and the dates must differ. Very short holding periods annualise to extreme rates. If flows change sign several times there can be more than one valid rate, and the solver reports one of them.
