How to use Step-Up SIP Calculator
- Enter your starting monthly SIP amount.
- Enter the percentage by which you will increase the SIP each year.
- Enter an expected annual return and the number of years. The default return is just an example.
- Read the total invested, estimated value and gain, then check how your SIP amount changes in the year table.
How the step-up works
A systematic investment plan invests a fixed amount each month. In a step-up plan, the instalment for year y is the starting amount multiplied by (1 + s)^(y - 1), where s is the yearly step-up as a decimal. Within a year the amount stays constant. Each month the balance is computed as (previous balance + instalment) x (1 + r/12), where r is the annual expected return. Repeating this for every month gives the final value; adding all instalments gives the total invested.
Worked example
Start with a monthly SIP of 10,000, raise it by 10 percent every year, assume 12 percent a year and run it for 10 years. The instalments go from 10,000 in year one to about 23,579 in year ten, and the total invested is 1,912,490.95. At the assumed return the estimated value is 3,374,326.26, an estimated gain of 1,461,835.31. A flat SIP of 10,000 for the same 10 years invests only 1,200,000 and ends near 2,323,391 under the same assumptions, which shows how much of the difference comes from contributing more, not from the return itself.
Tips and limits
Pick a step-up you can really sustain; a plan you abandon because it became too large helps nobody. If your income is irregular, consider a smaller step-up or raise the SIP only in years when you can.
- Returns are assumptions, not promises, and market-linked investments carry risk.
- Taxes, fees and exit loads are not included.
- Years must be a whole number from 1 to 50.
- This is an estimate only and not financial advice.
- Calculation is local to your browser; nothing is sent or saved.
Why use this step-up sip calculator tool
- Yearly step-up. The SIP rises by your chosen percentage once a year, matching how most people actually raise contributions.
- Invested versus value. See what you put in against what it may grow to, year by year.
- Final-year SIP shown. Check whether the amount you reach in the last year is realistic for your budget.
- Regional number formats. Switch between 1,00,000 and 100,000 style grouping and choose any currency symbol.
Frequently asked questions
Why use a step-up SIP instead of a flat one?
Most incomes grow over time, so a fixed SIP becomes a smaller share of your income each year. Raising it by a modest percentage keeps the habit proportionate and can lift the final corpus noticeably. Compare it with a flat SIP by setting the step-up to zero.
Are the returns guaranteed?
No. Market-linked returns vary and can be negative in some years. The expected return is an assumption you choose, and the estimate assumes it is earned smoothly every month, which real markets never do.
How is the monthly rate calculated?
The annual return is divided by 12 to get a monthly rate, and each instalment is assumed at the start of the month. Some providers use an effective monthly rate instead, which gives slightly different numbers.
