How to use Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount before tip.
  2. Pick a preset tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Enter how many people are sharing the bill.
  4. Choose a rounding option if you prefer whole-number totals, then read what each person pays.

How the calculation works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person’s share is the total divided by the number of people. For an 80.00 bill with an 18 percent tip, the tip is 14.40, the total is 94.40 and a two-way split is 47.20 each.

When rounding is on, the total is first raised to the next whole number, either overall or per person, and the difference is treated as extra tip. That keeps the arithmetic honest: the tool shows the real effective tip percentage after rounding.

Splitting the bill fairly

An equal split is simplest, but it is not always fair if some people ordered much less. In that case, agree on the tip percentage and have each person apply it to their own items. You can use the tool several times with different bill amounts and one person each.

For groups, consider whether a service charge has already been added. Some restaurants add a fixed percentage automatically for larger parties, and adding another tip would double up.

Tips on tipping

  • Check the receipt for an included service charge before adding a tip.
  • In places where tipping is uncommon, rounding up to the next whole amount is often enough.
  • Tip on the discounted amount if a coupon applies, unless you wish to reward good service on the original price.
  • Consider tipping more for exceptional service or large, complicated orders.
  • Keep small notes handy if cash tips are expected.

Limits

The tool does not know local taxes or customs and only does arithmetic. Totals are shown to two decimal places, so a split may differ from a card terminal by a cent because of rounding.

Why use this tip calculator tool

  • Quick presets. One tap for 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent, and any custom value works too.
  • Even split. Divides the total by any number of people and shows each person’s share of the tip.
  • Round up options. Round the total or each person’s share up to a whole number for easier payment.
  • Any currency. The tool uses plain numbers, so it works with any currency and any local tipping custom.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

Customs vary widely. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is typical in restaurants, while in many countries service is included or tipping is small or optional. Check local norms and whether a service charge is already on your bill.

Should I tip on the pre-tax amount?

Either is acceptable. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but some use the full bill. Enter whichever amount you want the percentage applied to.

How does rounding affect the tip?

Rounding up never reduces what you pay. The extra amount is counted as additional tip, and the effective tip percentage shown reflects it, so you can see exactly how generous the round-up is.
