How to use Date Difference Calculator
- Choose a start date and an end date. Tick Count the end date too if both days should be included.
- Read the total days, weeks and days, the years-months-days breakdown, and the number of Monday-to-Friday business days.
- In the second box choose a start date, add or subtract, enter an amount and a unit.
- Tick Business days only to skip weekends when adding or subtracting days.
Counting days correctly
Counting days between dates sounds simple, but small choices change the answer. Inclusive counting, where both the first and the last day count, always gives one more day than exclusive counting. Legal and financial documents usually state which one applies, such as “within 30 days of the date of this letter”. This tool lets you switch, so you can match the rule.
Calendar months complicate things further because months have 28 to 31 days. The years, months and days result counts whole calendar months first and then leftover days, borrowing the length of the month before the end date when needed. It is the same method used when people state their age.
Business-day counting and adding
Business days here are Monday to Friday. They are handy for estimating delivery, processing times, notice periods and project schedules. When you add business days to a date, the tool steps forward one day at a time and only counts weekdays, so adding 5 business days to a Friday lands on the following Friday.
Many organisations also treat national or bank holidays as non-working days, and some work on Saturdays. Check a local calendar and adjust by hand if that matters.
Practical uses
- Work out how many days remain until an event, trip or exam.
- Check a contract deadline, warranty or return window.
- Calculate length of service, pregnancy week estimates or time since an event.
- Plan project milestones in business days.
- Find the date 90 days from today for notice periods or payment terms.
Limits
Dates use the Gregorian calendar, including leap years, and the supported range follows your browser. The tool does not handle times of day or time zones, only calendar dates. For legal deadlines, always confirm the counting rule with the document or an advisor.
Why use this date difference calculator tool
- Several views of one gap. Total days, weeks and days, and a calendar breakdown in years, months and days.
- Business days. Counts weekdays between dates, useful for delivery estimates and deadlines.
- Add or subtract time. Move a date by days, weeks, months or years, with end-of-month handled sensibly.
- No time zone surprises. Calculations treat dates as whole calendar days, so daylight saving shifts never cause off-by-one errors.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculation include the end date?
By default it counts the days that pass from the start date to the end date, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. Tick Count the end date too to include both dates, which gives 2 days. Use whichever matches the rule in your contract or policy.
Are public holidays excluded from business days?
No. Only Saturdays and Sundays are skipped, because public holidays vary by country, region and year. Subtract holidays manually if they apply to you.
What happens when I add a month to 31 January?
February has no 31st, so the result is clamped to the last day of that month. Adding one month to 31 January gives 28 February, or 29 in a leap year.
