How to use Car Loan Calculator

  1. Set number format and currency symbol.
  2. Enter the on-road price and your down payment.
  3. Add extras you want financed (insurance, accessories) and enter the lender's rate and tenure.
  4. Optionally enter a balloon percentage to see the lower EMI and the extra interest it costs.

How the car loan is worked out

The amount financed is the on-road price minus your down payment plus any extras you choose to finance. The EMI uses the standard formula EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1). With a balloon amount B due at the end, the loan is split in two: the balloon is discounted to today, and only the rest is amortised, giving EMI = (P - B / (1 + r)^n) x r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n).

Because the balloon is never repaid during the term, interest keeps running on it for every month. That is why a balloon lowers the monthly payment yet raises total interest.

A verified worked example

Say the on-road price is 12,00,000, the down payment is 2,00,000 and 50,000 of insurance is financed, so 10,50,000 is borrowed. At an example 9% for 5 years (60 months) the EMI is 21,796.27 and total interest is 2,57,776.38.

Now add a 20% balloon, which is 2,10,000 due at the end. The EMI drops to 19,012.02, a monthly relief of about 2,784, but total interest rises to 3,00,721.10, about 42,945 more. You also still owe the 2,10,000 at month 60.

  • A larger down payment reduces both EMI and interest.
  • Shorter tenures cost less interest but need a higher EMI.
  • Ask about foreclosure charges and processing fees; they are not part of this calculation.
  • Check the residual value you can realistically expect for the car before agreeing to a balloon; a balloon above the resale price leaves you paying the gap.

Limits and privacy

The tool assumes a fixed rate, equal monthly instalments paid in arrears and no fees. Some lenders quote flat rates on car loans; if yours does, convert it with the flat versus reducing rate calculator first. Estimates only, not financial advice. Example values in the fields are not current market rates; always use the figures in your lender's sanction letter.

Why use this car loan calculator tool

  • On-road based. Starts from the full price you pay out the door, then subtracts the down payment.
  • Financed extras. Add insurance or accessories to the loan and see their effect.
  • Balloon option. Compare a standard EMI with a lower EMI plus a lump sum at the end.
  • True cost of the car. Shows down payment plus all EMIs, not just the loan interest.

Frequently asked questions

What is a balloon (residual) payment?

A lump sum due at the end of the loan. You pay lower EMIs during the term, but the deferred part keeps accruing interest, and you must pay it, refinance it or return the car.

Should I finance insurance and accessories?

Financing them adds to the amount charged interest. It can be convenient, but paying them from savings, if you can, avoids that interest.

Is the rate shown a real offer?

No. 9% is an example value. Car loan rates differ by lender, vehicle (new or used), your credit profile and date. Enter your offer's rate.
