History of Nauru
This small Pacific island was settled by Micronesian and Polynesian peoples many centuries ago and organised into twelve clans. European whalers and traders visited from the late 18th century, and Germany annexed the island in 1888. Phosphate deposits discovered around 1900 shaped its economy under German and later British-led mining. After the First World War it became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, with New Zealand and Britain as partners. Japan occupied it during the Second World War, after which it became a UN trust territory. Nauru gained independence in 1968 and is a republic with Yaren as its seat.
