History of Micronesia

The islands of present-day Micronesia were settled by seafaring peoples thousands of years ago. On Pohnpei, the stone complex of Nan Madol was built by the Saudeleur dynasty, with construction beginning around the 13th century. Spain claimed the Caroline Islands from the 16th century and sold them to Germany in 1899. Japan occupied them in 1914 and administered them under a League of Nations mandate. After the Second World War the United States governed them as a trust territory. The Federated States of Micronesia adopted a constitution in 1979 and entered free association with the United States in 1986. Its capital is Palikir.
