History of Mozambique
Bantu-speaking farming peoples settled the region of Mozambique in the first millennium AD, and Swahili-speaking trading towns developed along the coast, linked to Indian Ocean commerce. The Portuguese arrived in 1498 with Vasco da Gama and gradually established trading posts and a colony. An armed independence struggle led by Frelimo began in 1964. Mozambique became independent in 1975. A civil war between the Frelimo government and Renamo broke out in the late 1970s and ended with a peace agreement signed in Rome in 1992. The first multiparty elections followed in 1994. Its capital is Maputo.
