History of Comoros
The Comoro Islands were settled by peoples from Africa, Madagascar and Southeast Asia, and later received Arab and Shirazi influence that brought Islam. Rival sultanates controlled the islands until France acquired Mayotte in 1841 and extended protectorates to the other islands in the 1880s. The archipelago was administered with Madagascar and later became an overseas territory. In 1975 Comoros declared independence. Mayotte voted to stay with France, and its status remains disputed between Comoros and France. The country has experienced numerous coups and attempted coups since independence, and became a federal union under a constitution adopted in 2001.
