How to use Savings Goal Calculator
- Choose a mode: monthly saving needed, or how long to reach the goal.
- Enter the target amount, any existing savings and an expected annual return.
- Add either the number of years or the monthly saving, depending on the mode.
- Tick the inflation option if the target is in today’s money, then read the result and the year-by-year table.
How the maths works
A savings goal has four moving parts: the target, the time, the growth rate and the money you put in. This calculator solves for one when you supply the others. For the monthly saving, let T be the target, S your existing savings, n the number of months and m the monthly growth rate. The existing savings become S x (1 + m)^n. The remainder, T - S x (1 + m)^n, must come from deposits, and a level monthly deposit P grows to P x ((1 + m)^n - 1) / m. So P = (T - S x (1 + m)^n) x m / ((1 + m)^n - 1). If the rate is zero the formula simply becomes P = (T - S) / n.
For the time mode the page rolls the balance forward month by month, multiplying by (1 + m) and adding your deposit, until it first meets the target. This also works with inflation because the target is raised every month by the inflation rate. Without inflation there is an equivalent closed form, n = ln((T + P/m) / (S + P/m)) / ln(1 + m).
Worked examples
Suppose you want 10,00,000 in five years with nothing saved yet and an example return of 8 per cent a year. The monthly rate is 0.6434 per cent and the factor over 60 months is about 72.95, so the required deposit is about 13,709 a month. You deposit roughly 8,22,541 yourself and growth supplies about 1,77,459.
Flip it around: if you can save only 10,000 a month at the same return, the target is reached after 78 months, which is 6 years and 6 months. Now add inflation. If 10,00,000 is in today’s money, 100,000 is already saved, inflation is 5 per cent and the deadline is five years, the target grows to about 12,76,282 and the monthly saving needed rises to about 15,482.
Practical advice and limits
Start with a realistic return, not the most optimistic one. Short goals under three years are usually better held in stable products, where growth is small, so a low return assumption is wise. For long goals, remember that market returns are not smooth and fees and taxes reduce what you keep. Increase your monthly amount whenever your pay rises.
The tool does not model taxes, fees, irregular deposits or withdrawals. Calculations happen entirely in your browser and nothing is saved. Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice.
- Write each goal with a deadline and a price.
- Automate the monthly transfer on payday.
- Keep an emergency fund separate from other goals.
Why use this savings goal calculator tool
- Two modes in one tool. Solve for the monthly saving when the deadline is fixed, or for the time needed when the monthly budget is fixed.
- Optional inflation adjustment. If your target is priced in today’s money, the tool grows it to the price you will really pay.
- Existing savings counted. A starting balance grows alongside your monthly deposits.
- Clear breakdown. See how much you contribute and how much comes from investment growth.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I enter?
Use the figure that fits where the money will actually be kept. A savings account, a fixed deposit and a market investment behave very differently, and the 8 per cent default is only an editable example, not a current rate. Use 0 to see the plain division of the target by the months.
When does each monthly deposit earn interest?
Deposits are assumed to be made at the end of each month, so the first deposit earns growth from month two. The annual return is converted into an equivalent monthly rate, (1 + annual)^(1/12) - 1, so a full year of growth equals your stated annual figure.
Why does the time mode say the goal is not reached?
If the monthly saving is zero or tiny and the return is low or negative, or the inflation-adjusted target moves away faster than your savings grow, the balance never catches up. The tool stops after 100 years. Increase the monthly amount to fix this.
