How to use Sales Tax Calculator
- Choose Add tax or Remove tax.
- Type the price, your local tax rate in percent and the quantity.
- Read the price before tax, the tax amount and the total on the right.
- Change any number to see the result update straight away.
Adding tax to a price
When a shelf price excludes tax, the tax is added at the till. Multiply the price by the rate to get the tax, then add it. With a quantity above one, the calculator multiplies the price first, then applies the rate to the total.
Removing tax from a total
If a price already includes tax, the tax is not simply the rate taken off the total. Taking 8 percent of 108 gives the wrong answer. The right method is to divide by 1.08, which this tool does in Remove tax mode.
Rates differ by location
Sales tax rates differ by state, province, country and sometimes city, and they change over time. Many places tax some goods at a lower rate or not at all. Always enter the rate that applies to where and what you are buying.
Limits
All calculations happen in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server. Results are estimates. Real receipts round tax per item or per invoice depending on the seller, so your total may differ by a cent or two. The tool does not know local rates, exemptions or special taxes, and it is not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal, then add it to the price. For example, at 8 percent, tax on 100 is 8 and the total is 108. This calculator does that for you when you choose Add tax and enter your rate.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax-included price by one plus the rate as a decimal. At 8 percent, divide by 1.08. Choose Remove tax in this calculator, enter the total and your rate, and it shows the price before tax and the tax portion.
What is my local sales tax rate?
Rates vary by location and can change, and some items are taxed differently or not at all. This tool does not include rate tables. Check your receipt, your local tax authority or the seller for the rate that applies, then type it in.
Can I use this for VAT or GST?
Yes. The maths is the same for any percentage tax added on top of a price. Enter your VAT or GST rate as the tax rate. Some countries apply different rates to different goods, so use the rate for your item.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The numbers you enter are used only in your browser to work out the result. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and nothing is stored when you leave the page. It works on your own device, so it is safe to use with private figures, and it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
