How to use Meta Tag Generator
- Enter the title, description and canonical URL of your page.
- Watch the counters and the Google preview and adjust the wording to fit.
- Add Open Graph and Twitter details, such as an image URL, for nicer social sharing.
- Copy the generated HTML into the head section of your page.
What meta tags do
Meta tags are small pieces of information placed in the head of an HTML page. They are not visible on the page itself, but browsers, search engines and social networks read them. The title element names the page in tabs and search results. The description meta tag supplies a summary that may appear under the title in a result. The robots tag tells crawlers whether to index the page and follow its links, and the canonical link names the preferred address when the same content is reachable from several URLs.
Open Graph tags, originally created by Facebook, and Twitter card tags control the title, summary and image shown when someone shares your link in a chat or social post. Without them, platforms guess, and the result can look poor.
Writing good titles and descriptions
Put the most important words near the start, make each page's title and description unique, and write for people rather than for algorithms. Describe what the visitor will actually find. Repeating the same text across many pages, or stuffing in keywords, tends to help neither readers nor rankings.
For social sharing, use an image of roughly 1200 by 630 pixels hosted at an absolute, publicly reachable address. Many platforms cache previews, so after changing tags you may need to use the platform's debugging tool to refresh them.
- Use noindex for pages you do not want in search results, such as thank-you pages.
- Make the canonical URL absolute, including https.
- Keep one title element and one description per page.
Limits of this tool
The snippet preview is an approximation. Real search results depend on device, query and the engine's own rewriting, and truncation is based on rendered width rather than character count. The tool also cannot check that your image URL loads or that your canonical address is correct.
The generated block also includes the charset and viewport tags that most pages need. Everything is built in your browser from the values you type, and nothing is stored or sent.
Why use this meta tag generator tool
- Length counters. Colour-coded counts show whether titles and descriptions are too short, about right or likely to be cut off.
- Search preview. A Google-style snippet shows how the title, address and description could look.
- Social tags. Open Graph and Twitter card tags are filled in, falling back to your main title and description.
- Escaped output. Quotes, ampersands and angle brackets are escaped so the generated attributes are always valid.
Frequently asked questions
What lengths should I aim for?
Search results usually show around 50 to 60 characters of a title and about 150 to 160 characters of a description before truncating, although the real limit is based on pixel width and varies. Treat the counters as guidance, not a guarantee.
Do search engines use the keywords tag?
Google has said it ignores the meta keywords tag, and it offers no ranking benefit. It is included here as an optional field only because some other tools and internal search systems still read it. Leave it empty if you prefer.
Will Google always show my description?
No. Search engines often write their own snippet from the page content when they think it better matches the search. A clear, accurate description raises the chance that yours is used, and it also helps people decide to click.
