The short answer
Open the QR code generator, choose Wi-Fi, enter your network name and password, pick the security type (most home routers use WPA/WPA2/WPA3), then download or print the code. Anyone who scans it with their phone camera is offered a one-tap join.
The password is stored inside the code. Only display it where you are happy for people to have the password.
Step by step
- Choose Wi-Fi in the QR code generator.
- Enter the exact network name (SSID). It is case-sensitive.
- Enter the password exactly, or leave it empty and choose “None” for an open network.
- Choose WPA/WPA2/WPA3, WEP or none. If you are unsure, check your router’s settings. WPA is the usual choice.
- If your network is hidden, set hidden network to Yes.
- Download the PNG or SVG and test it with your own phone before printing.
What is inside the code?
A Wi-Fi code is plain text in a standard format, for example WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:mypassword;;. Characters such as semicolons, commas, colons and quotes in a name or password must be escaped with a backslash, and the generator does this for you.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| T | Security type (WPA, WEP or nopass) |
| S | Network name (SSID) |
| P | Password |
| H | Hidden network (true) |
Printing and placing it
- Print at least about 2 to 3 cm wide, and larger if people will scan from a distance.
- Keep dark dots on a light background for reliable scanning.
- Use a guest network if your router has one, so visitors are separate from your main devices.
- If you change the password, make a new code and replace the old one.
Troubleshooting
- Phone does not offer to join: check the camera is set to scan QR codes and that the code is sharp and large enough.
- Joins but no internet: the router password may have changed, or the network is not connected to the internet.
- Special characters in the password: re-generate the code and test it again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a QR code for my Wi-Fi?
Choose Wi-Fi in a QR code generator, enter the network name, password and security type, then download the code.
Do Wi-Fi QR codes work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, current phone cameras can read them and offer to join the network.
Is it safe to put my Wi-Fi password in a QR code?
The password is readable by anyone who scans it, so display it only where you are comfortable sharing it, and consider a guest network.
What security type should I choose?
WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for most home networks. Check your router settings if you are unsure.
Does the QR code expire?
No. It is static and stays valid until you change the network name or password.
