History of Togo

The area of present-day Togo was home to Ewe and other peoples when European traders arrived along the coast from the fifteenth century. Germany established a protectorate called Togoland in 1884. After the First World War the territory was divided into British and French mandates, later United Nations trusteeships. British Togoland joined the Gold Coast, which became Ghana, after a 1956 plebiscite, while French Togoland became independent in 1960. A military coup took place in 1967, and a multiparty constitution was adopted in 1992. Togo is a West African republic with its capital at Lome.
