History of Liberia
The region of Liberia was long home to peoples including the Kru, Mande and Kpelle. In the 19th century the American Colonization Society, founded in 1816, helped settle freed African Americans on the coast, with the first settlers arriving in 1822. These settlers and their descendants, known as Americo-Liberians, dominated politics for generations. Liberia declared independence on 26 July 1847. A military coup in 1980 ended that era, and civil wars from 1989 to 2003 followed. A peace agreement in 2003 ended the fighting, and Liberia is now a presidential republic with Monrovia as its capital.
